When you switch octaves, the Tanpura sound should change from low to medium to high notes. You should be able to tell the difference especially when you change from "low" to "high" octave. The notes are still the same, but the sound should differ in the shrillness of the notes. Let me know if you are not able to experience this and we can help you further.
